Inter-friches

International and interdisciplinary meetings on wastelands:
a research network (FR CIST 2022-2024)

Wastelands are ubiquitous transitional spaces in urban or agricultural environments and a subject of study that is being consolidated in several disciplines (urbanism, geography, sociology, planning, landscape, ecology). It is difficult to grasp wastelands in their entirety and restore their dynamics, because they are approached from a disciplinary perspective that selects only one aspect which arouses interest or even a certain fascination: their materiality, social practices, their imaginary, the forms of associative or political commitment.

Following what other forms such as public spaces have represented in the past, the craze for urban wastelands requires to take a certain distance in order to understand them in a transversal way as a multi-dimensional societal object that strongly reveals the new tensions and spatialities specific to societies. The meetings that we propose through the organization of workshops have a double objective: first, they aim to build a network of researchers and professionals who deal with the issue of wastelands. Secondly, the project aims to question the disciplinary methods of the study of wastelands, to characterize them in a more systematic and transdisciplinary way.

Through an itinerant approach, the crossed views of researchers from various disciplines and backgrounds allow for the serialization and comparative analysis of these difficult-to-define spaces in order to sketch out a prospective research on wastelands.
